About Steve Johnston
Artist Statement
Biography
Contemporary Scottish artist Steve Johnston creates powerful pieces, placing small characters against vast, open scenes, whilst leaving the details open to interpretation.
He was original photographer and inventor of the ‘Straight up’ style of photograph at i-D magazine. Steve has had his work published in many books and magazines and is represented in the permanent collection of the Arts Council of England. He has exhibited widely including at Tate Britain, The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, Hayward Gallery London, Victoria & Albert Museum, Scope Art Miami Beach and various i-D magazine touring exhibitions worldwide. Returning to his first love of painting in 1991 Steve has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad including USA, Canada, Australia and Singapore.
Artist Statement
There are many influences in my work. Aaron Siskind, Rauschenberg, Twombly & Tapies to name a few..the new paintings have arrived organically and naturally just through working constantly really.
