Biography
Claire was born in 1952 in North Wales, studied at the Royal Forest of Dean College. She acquired a B.A. Fine Art degree in printmaking in 1999 at the University of Wales, Cardiff. We have exhibited Claire’s work in the Gallery almost since our conception, and her work is always popular. In her acrylics and pastel paintings Claire employs an expressive linear style, derived form her knowledge and use of printmaking, drawings and graphic skills, which are central to her work as is the development and change inherent in the drawing process, which is laid bare, not hidden within works. Claire’s work is sensitive and elegiac in nature, showing her personal response to the environment from which she draws her work; she finds revelation in the seemingly ordinary, such as domestic scenes, landscape and portraiture. The work also reflects the nature and the history of the post –industrial Welsh Valleys in which she lives and works.
Artist Statement
In h-Art 2018 sisters Belinda Hopkins and Claire Griffiths capture the characters, sights and sounds of their journey last year on an Elvis themed charity walk for Mind. Their five day adventure took them from Chepstow around the coastal path, culminating at Porthcawl, for the opening day of Europe's largest Elvis Presley Festival.
